“After the Gold Rush” by Neil Young (Larry Loeb & Paul Loeb Cover)

“After the Gold Rush” is the title track of Neil Young’s 1970 mega hit album. My guest performer is my son, Paul, who masterfully plays the trumpet, duplicating the flugelhorn solo on Young’s original recording.

The song, “After the Gold Rush”, is an early eco-protest song. It is a surreal, time-traveling allegory that explores the environmental destruction of Earth, the disillusionment of the modern age, and humanity’s hope for the future. The title contrasts the historical rush for wealth with the desolate aftermath and need for ecological healing. To me, it is a timely warning about the effects and dangers of global warming.

The album, “After the Gold Rush”, produced other hits, such as “Southern Man”, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”, and “Don’t Let it Bring You Down”.

“Running on Empty” by Jackson Browne (Larry Loeb cover)

Jackson Browne is one of the finest and most influential singer-songwriters of our generation. “Running on Empty” is the title track of his 1977 live album of the same name, recorded at a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, in August of 1977. Featuring songs themed around life on the road, the entire album was recorded on tour, either live on stage, or in locations associated with touring, such as backstage, on tour buses, or in hotel rooms. The song was featured prominently in the 1994 film, “Forrest Gump”, as the main theme for the running montage in which Forrest treks across the United States on foot.

“When the Ship Comes In” by Bob Dylan (Larry Loeb Cover)

“When the Ship Comes In” is from Bob Dylan’s 3rd album, “The Times They Are A-Changin’”. The song is included in the Oscar’s nominated movie “A Complete Unknown” – a biopic of Dylan’s early career. “When the Ship Comes In” is an epic allegory about vanquishing the oppressive “powers that be” – a brutal and pointed beatdown of authority figures.

“Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel (Larry Loeb & Paul Loeb Cover)

“Just the Way You Are” is from Billy Joel’s fifth studio album “The Stranger” (1977), “Just the Way You Are” garnered two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1979 and is considered a pop standard. My cover is my 3rd video as a duet with my son, Paul Loeb, who stars as a master clarinetist.

“You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King/James Taylor (Larry Loeb Cover)

“You’ve Got a Friend” was written by Carole King, one of the greatest and most prolific singer, songwriter, and musicians of all time.  It was first recorded by King and included on her second studio album, Tapestry, in 1971.. Another well-known version is by James Taylor from his album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.  His was released as a single in 1971, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The two versions were recorded simultaneously in 1971 with shared musicians.

“You’ve Got a Friend” won Grammy Awards both for Taylor (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) and King (Song of the Year).

“The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel (Larry Loeb & Paul Loeb Cover)

“The Boxer” is one of Simon and Garfunkel’s most famous songs. It was a huge hit for them, and is included on their 1970 Grammy Award winning album, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
